Protect our children's health from air pollution

Clean Air Day is coming up on 17 June with the theme ‘protect our children’s health from air pollution’. The annual campaign is a moment when thousands of people up and down the country come together to collaboratively voice support, hold events, make pledges and take action on toxic air.

Every year, air pollution causes up to 36,000 deaths in the UK.  However, during the COVID-19 lockdown we experienced a drop in traffic pollution levels.  Let’s keep up the momentum to keep our air clean by pledging to change our habits.

Where does outdoor air pollution come from?

There are many sources of outdoor air pollution including road transport, energy generation, industry, open fires, stoves, and agriculture.

What can I do?

You can pledge to make a difference by changing your habits.  Why not leave the car at home and catch the bus, even if it’s just for one day of the week?  If everyone switched just one car journey a month to the bus, there would be one billion fewer car journeys on our roads, and a saving of 2 million tonnes of CO2.  Less cars on the road would mean less congestion and idling vehicles, and therefore less air pollution.

What Cardiff Bus are doing

We’ve placed an order for 36 zero-emission electric buses which will be on the road from the end of 2021.  Find out more about our electric bus order here.

We’ve also upgraded some of our older engines to Euro VI emission standards, which are better for the environment, as part of Cardiff Council’s Clean Air Project.  Find out more about this retrofit here.
